My Tale:

I was left at the SPCA because I could no longer be cared for by my owner. I am friendly, gentle and love to give kisses. I never get angry and ignore kitties, but would prefer not to live with small dogs. I am almost leash trained too! Don't you want to take me for a walk to a new home?

1.- Energy Levels

I thought that she was going to be full of energy.... But, she likes to sleep as much as my lazy dog.
We have a back yard... so, she goes out to play with my dog maybe 30minutes every 4-5 hrs.
If you don't have a back yard... or another dog to play with , then you will need to do exercise with her.
She will be perfect for a family that enjoys going for walks or runs.

2.-  Demand Affection

She wants a lot of affection... So, she will ask for it...   She thinks she is a cat.  She gets very close to your legs and tries for you to touch her.  If you let her, she will sit on top of you or your feet.  She needs contact.

She will get close to you, and then she will try to kiss you... and if you let her.. she will jump very softly on you to get a hug.  OR if you are sitting down... she will put her face in your lap and stay there until you pet her.

She wants the attention of a human more than the attention of another dog.  But, eventually when she things that her human likes her... then, she relaxes enough to start playing with other dogs.

Note:  If you are busy... and don't have time... she will try a couple of times to get your attention...  But, if she doesn't  succeed, she will leave you alone.

3.- Excitability

At the beginning, when she saw the leash...  she used to get really exited... tried to kiss you first.. and then jumped on you "very strong"...  We are working on this every day...
Ah!!  And her tail goes all over the place... so you have to "dog prove" your home...

Note:  I have notice that when my husband wants her to play with him....  And he starts to provoke her.... she gets really excited and jumps on top of him... and starts running like crazy.

She doesn't do that with me... since I am very easy going and do not provoke her.

4.- Barking

She doesn't bark that much.  But, when she does...  She has a very loud bark...   It sounds more like a bark of a 100lb rottweiler.   I  feel protected.

She also barks sometimes, to let other dogs in the neighborhood know that she is there.  The first two weeks her barking was bad... But, now that all the dogs in the neighborhood know what is her territory... Now she doesn't bark at them anymore.

Because of my dog, she has learn to bark at people that walk by near the house... But, as soon as visitors come in... she just want to give them kisses.

5.-  Children

She loves them.  She is very gentle with them.   She tries to kiss them.  She stills jumps when playing.
Note:  Kids can not walk her on the leash yet. at this moment..  she is very strong... and will pull them.

6.-  Other Dogs

At first, she doesn't care for them.  She wants attention from humans.  Then, eventually she tries to play with other dogs.

Tippy and my dog play a lot chasing each other.  She is very gentile... but not submissive. If you have a dog, and it is submissive, things will work find.

Note:  When playing my dog barks at her, but she growls back... and it sounds like they are killing each other... but, tails are waging and they are actually playing.

Also note that she is not a submissive dog.... So, if a another dog will try to intimidate her,  she will stand up for herself.

7.-  Cats

I am not sure.  According to her record...  She ignored the office cat.

8.-  Training

Since she craves attention... and not food....  It has been a little more difficult to train her.  But, if you practice enough times, she learns it.  You just have to be consistent.

a)  "sit"
She knows the command very well...

b)  "down"
She knows the command.... but she does it only when there is no other distraction in the room.  She will go down... but if you move an inch... she will stand up again.

c) "come"
She knows the command.... but if there is distractions, she will not obey.
Specially if she is outside.  Actually, outside... her meaning of "come"... is get very close to the person... and run in circles around him... then speed up so he can not catch her.

d)  "Kennel up"
She knows very well.

e)  "Go Pee" and "Hurry Up"...
She knows that command for going out to pee.
But, she doesn't pee on command... like my other dog does.

f)  "Leave It".
She knows  ... but not as well.  We still working on that one.  This is when we want her to leave behind a toy, or stop chewing on her feet, or leave food on the ground without her getting it.

g) "Stay"
She doesn't understand the command.....  She will sit or go down... but will not stay on that position long.

h)  "ok"
She knows the word   ... as a release from a command.

i)  " I'll be back"...
She knows that phrase as to let her know that she is not going with me this time... But, I will be back.

j)  "Are you ready"...
She knows that is time to go for a run or go for a ride in the car.  Problem... she gets very excited.. and can not get her to do anything else after that.

k)   "Up" ...
She knows this command to jump up onto the car.
note.. she is not allow to jump on our furniture.

l)  "Off"
She doesn't understand it.  This is used when you don't want her to jump at you.

9.-  Housebreaking

She is housebroken... At the beginning, we kept her in  an schedule.... And in someway, we still keep her on a schedule....for the last pee of the night and the fist pee of the morning.  This insure us that she will not go inside the house.

For the other times of the day, she goes by herself.  We have a doggy door.
She goes out at at least 4 times a day every 4-5 hrs.  She sleeps all night long.

She knows how to use the "doggy" door... so, she will be able to go out by herself in case you can not make it home on time.

10. - Walks

She is learning now how to walk on the leash...
At first,... she took me for a walk...  She is very strong.

I have started to use on her a "gentle leader".  It is amazing.  We had a nice walk yesterday and she did not give me any trouble.

To See gentle leader videos:
What is a gentle leader?
How to adjust it to your dog?

Also, I have just started to use a "Prong Collar".  I am not sure if I like it yet.

11.- Destructiveness

- not at all.  But, we give her things to keep her mouth entertained.

-  she has learn how to eat out of a "
Kong" - but she gets bored if the Kong is the large size.  We gave her then, the one for small dogs... and she lasted hours trying to get the food out.  (Don't freeze the Kong... she will get bored.  And if you can...  mix the food with a little bit of cheese flavor... she loves it)

-  she likes the toys that are extra-soft and snugly plush.  She launches them to the air.. and she picks them up.  It is fun to see.

- She doesn't care/touch or destroyed shoes, electronics, etc... We have left plenty of them in the floor for her to take... and nothing.

- When bored... she likes to "groom herself".  She really thinks she is a cat.
But, be aware... that too much grooming is not good for her.  Specially since she will try to chew her foot of....  At first we though it was allergies.  And yes.. it may have been... But, now when I see her "grooming herself" too much... I give her a distraction like the kong or the toy... and she forgets about the itching... and starts playing with the toy.  Also, to distract her, I will take her for a walk or a run...

12.- Food

-  She is not a food driven dog.  She prefers affection to food.
-  She eats twice a day (1.5 cups/meal).

-  We give her: "Lamb & Rice Premium". And the best part is... we don't have to go and get the food... They deliver.

-  We have given her bones...  and she loves them..  (but choose a medium/small size)...  She gets bored easy.    Also choose the soft type bones... the hard ones she will start but quit in the middle... with the soft ones.. she eats them all.
See "
BusyBone".

-  she like "Kongs".. but choose the small size and add a little bit of cheese flavor.  She loves it.  And don't freeze them....  she will ignore them then.

- Note... if you have a dog... make sure she eats all her food.  Because sometimes she leaves some of her dish... and my dog finishes her meal for her.

13.- Bed

she sleeps anywhere.   She is very comfortable in my dogs Kennel.
If you put her in the Kennel she will not whine.  She will stay there until you take her out.

Note:  she has not tried to jump up on our bed or couches.

14.- Trash

We have test her...  and she doesn't go for the trash.
She doesn't break trash bags either.  But, if you happen to leave a trash bag open, don't worry... she will not dig in...  Except once that we through away left over "BBQ Baby ribs"... She could not resist the temptation.
But, as soon as we said:  "No... Leave it"...  She left it.... and never come back for it.

15.- Visitors

She is a sweet hearth with people that come to visit.
We have had many parties... and she just walks by people asking for some love and giving kisses.

She receives Pet Sitters very well too...  So, she will bark at first... but as soon the person is in the house...  then, she will try to give them kisses.

Note:
If the visitors are unwanted...  Then is another story.
She scared a guy out of my property once.  That guy worked for the city and went into my property without telling me.  Her barking let me know that something was wrong...  She did not get close to the guy but her barking was so loud that the guy run out of my property.

16.- Car Riding

Tippy is great.  She sits or lies down.  She tried once to go to the front of the car...  But we pushed her back and said in a strong voice:  "No...  Back"
She never tried to go to the front again.  We usually open the window 1/4th.  If you open more, she will try to put all her head out...  So, be careful.

When you park... leaving her inside...  She will move to the driver sit... and wait for you.  So, be aware of this when it is raining outside.

17.- Scape / Running / Jumping

She has not tried to scape at all.  We have a 5ft fence... and she is not interested on jumping.

But, she is very interested on smelling all around the property.  So if the door is open... she will go out, and mark her territory around all the neighborhood.
And sadly, she does not respond to the "come" command... So, it will be difficult to catch her.  So, make sure to keep her inside your property.

Note... if she leaves your house....  use reverse psychology.  Don't chase her down...  Just walk toward her calling her name... and then turn around and leave her there....  She will run back to you like saying... "Hey... I am here... didn't you see me???".  Or get in your car... and open the car door...  she prefers to ride the car than run around... So, she will jump in.

18.- Fears

She is NOT afraid of noises at all.  We have tried:
- washer and drier
- dish washer, vacuum cleaner
- printers, fax machines, shredder
- thunders , fireworks.

She actually feels curious where are the noises are coming from.  Then, she ignores them.
